Stuart Wade's Down to The Bone return with what is possibly their best album to date. After the comparatively unsuccessful (commercially) Crazy Vibes And Things, the band has a new label, but a familiar sound albeit with a Latin twist on a couple of the tracks. On that Latin side check "The Flow" with scat vocals courtesy of the legendary Flora Purim, but even more impressive is the wonderfully seductive "Dancing To a Samba" featuring the fine vocalising of Guida de Palma. "Samba", given supportive club play, could easily become the sound of the summer 2004 whilst on the fusion tip there are almost too many gems to mention, but personally the barnstorming "I'll Always Hold You Close" with its relentless groove and wicked Hammond solo from Brian Auger hits the spot perfectly. Crossing Boundaries, Global Village, and Back To Business are other fine grooves too. An altogether excellent new outing from DTTB and a musically superb way to kick off 2004. Malcolm Prangell, Blues and Soul Magazine - album of the month Producer and composer Stuart Wade present his fifth album and all 13 tracks on this funk-ridden groove-driven LP confirm that the kings of the UK jazz fusion, Down To The Bone, are still going strong. Signed in the USA to Narada Jazz they continue to delve deeper. Guida de Palma's vocals grace 'Dancing To A Samba' and the queen of Brazilian Jazz, Flora Purim, rides the four to the floor pulse of 'The Flow'. Wade has also enlisted master musician Brian Auger and the combination of blaxploitation movie style intros, JBs style riffs and infectiously catchy piano and flute melodies, make for gratifying listening. Let's hope Wade's ensemble can duplicate their Stateside success story here in the UK. Watch out for that Agent K remix of 'The Flow.' Straight No Chaser, Spring 2004 What the DJs have said about 'The Flow' 12" feat. Flora Purim (Remixes from Agent K and Mr Gone) "Kaidi instrumental works for me...added to my playlist at #16." (Mr Scruff, Keep it Unreal, UK) "Agent K representing the style once again. That's the cut for me." (Mark De Clive Lowe, UK) "Great 12" - Love the smooth flow" (LTJ Bukem, Cooking, The End, London)
