There is little doubt that EMI had high hopes for Rabin's recording career. An internal 1956 memo identified three young sought-after violinists: Christian Ferras, johanna Martzy and the 'best young American violinist', Michael Rabin. This view was reinforced later following Rabin's 1957 recording of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto with Sir Adrian Boult and the Philharmonia. EMI commissioned a set of 13 publicity photographs some of which would in time become iconic images of their young star. In addition, plans were unden/vay to extend Rabin's contract for a year with the option of an additional year, in essence keeping him in the recording studio until the middle of 1960. He would be required to record one LP a year, the same as in his original 1954 contract.
In 1957, before Rabin's contract negotiations had been finalised, EMI restructured its US companies by merging EMI (US) and the American Angel operation with their recently acquired Capitol Records subsidiary. Under this new arrangement Rabin, as an American resident, was eligible for a Capitol contract rather than an EMI one, and he was in favour of this. He also let EMI know that james Petrillo, president of the American Federation of Musicians had forbidden him to record in Europe, a threat that EMI quickly dismissed as bluster on Petrillo's part.
