On his first album McCoy Tyner was joined by fellow Coltraneites Art Davis and Elvin Jones. For his second Impulse date, the pianist chose to work with a bassist and drummer who have not been his team-mates in the John Coltrane Quartet, thus establishing a fresh and challenging playing context. Yet Tyner's sense of form and ability to establish rapport with other players are so strong and immediate that it seems hard to believe that the music on this album is not product of a seasoned triumvirate.
